Watering Basics

BASIC WATERING INSTRUCTIONS

Mature trees should have a good soaking watering 1 x per month, especially during the hotter months (in cooler weather, only water if no appreciable rainfall). Good soaking watering =  ground damp 4-5″ deep (oscillating sprinkler, 30-45 minutes; sprinkler system, 20 minutes; can take up to 2 hours depending on watering method and soil composition). The best way to tell if you have heavily watered enough is to do the trowell test included in the following link (or use a 6-7” screwdriver, if it goes into the ground easily then you’ve done a good job, if not, keep watering).
